Research, experimentation and award-winning wines

The partnership with the University of Florence for research into native grapes has resulted in the development of wines with unique characteristics in the Tuscany region

In addition to producing award-winning wines, San Felice stands out for its work with the genetic heritage of Tuscan winemaking. The property has an experimental vineyard, called Vitiarium.

With the aim of identifying native grape varieties that, when used in small quantities, could personalize and enhance the characteristics of Sangiovese, and at the same time, ultimately prevent certain varieties from falling into oblivion, in the late 1980s, San Felice and the University of Florence joined forces to conduct a research project on native grapes.

The researchers collected and classified more than 270 Tuscan grape varieties, which were then grown, tested and analyzed. The results of these studies helped San Felice earn awards for several of the winery’s labels, including Campogiovanni Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG 2013 (94 points James Suckling, 93 points Robert Parker, 93 points Wine Spectator), Il Grigio Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2014 (91 points Decanter, 91 points Robert Parker, 90 points James Suckling) and Il Grigio Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2014 (93 points Robert Parker, 92 points Wine Spectator).

For its extensive research and experimentation, and also for its ability to spot trends before they develop, San Felice is recognized as an innovative estate. The acquisition of the estate by the Allianz Group in the 1970s marked a new development model for the winery. A complete and meticulous restoration accentuated the characteristic architecture. In addition, an extensive vine replanting program was launched, with the aim of bringing out the best in the predominant Sangiovese. In 1982, the Group also purchased the Campogiovanni estate, comprising 20 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of Montalcino, where the aforementioned Campogiovanni Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG is produced.

San Felice is concerned with preserving the uniqueness of its land for future generations. The vineyards are managed in such a way as to offer a lower environmental impact and a higher quality product.

Tuscany

Italy

When you think of Tuscany, you think of its rolling landscapes, incredible views and excellent wines! The tradition of this area dates back to the 5th century BC. Today, it is one of the most famous and prolific wine-producing regions in Europe. Its vineyards produce a variety of internationally recognized wines in various styles, such as Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti. The Sangiovese grape, used to produce these wines, is the most widely cultivated variety in Italy and has become synonymous with red wines in Tuscany.
