Pioneering a stunning New Zealand region

New Zealand's new wine region, set against the backdrop of the Tararua Range, is where Ōhau Wines produces exceptionally aromatic wines.

Ōhau, a new New Zealand wine region on the west coast of the North Island, is the inspiration for the name of the area’s first winery, which began operations in 2009. Positioned as a supplier of international wines, Ōhau Wines quickly gained a dedicated following and received several prestigious awards.

Jane Cooper, the person behind the winery, is considered one of the leading winemakers in the industry today. She was responsible for the region’s first vintage, and since then, Ōhau has quickly become known for its exceptionally aromatic wines. Courageous, creative and inventive, the team at the winery is willing to take risks and achieve the seemingly impossible.

Ōhau Wines has a genuine focus on finding balance between its production and the land, the team behind it and the community it is part of – small but with a strong spirit. The Tararua Mountains in the east of the region provide a stunning backdrop to the vineyards and access to a direct source of artesian water, some of the purest in New Zealand.

The rocky soil of Ōhau’s vineyards in the Horowhenua district is perfect for producing high-quality grapes. This, combined with the warm sunshine, provides the essence of the high-quality wines the company strives to deliver.

Ōhau

New Zealand

Ōhau is the newest wine region in the southern North Island of New Zealand, with the Tararua Mountains as a backdrop. Over the centuries, it has been shaped by the Ōhau River, which has created gravel deposits – resulting in fertile, stony soil. The potential of the region was discovered by a local viticulturist, who noticed similarities between the area and the best sites in the famous Marlborough region.
